Upgrading from 8.10.2.12 - remote cloud environment

Post by Brian » Wed Feb 03, 2016 4:30 pm

Does anyone have any tips on upgrading remotely? I currently use HTML5 for my users to login. I can login via remote desktop as well.

My last attempt at upgrading failed miserably. Here's what I did:
Logged in via remote desktop. Stopped web services and verified no other users were logged in. I ran UpdateRelease.exe, it made it through just a few screens and then crashed. I could no longer login.
I had our hosting provider reboot the server. Still could not login. I had them try running the UpdateRelease.exe, it appeared to finish w/out error but yet we could not login. Ran the CompatibilityUpdate.exe, rebooted, still could not login.

At this point, my hosting provider tried to un-install tsplus. This left the server crippled - meaning all file extension associations were gone. I could not open any .exe's, links, server manager, etc. From here our only option was a restore of the OS from a snap shot.

I need to get this server upgraded tonight - any ideas would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello,

This is a very unusual behavior and I am very sorry to read that you went into so much trouble.

As far as I know your updating procedure was good : being the only one logged in the server is recommended. Updating through standard RDP is also recommended in comparison to HTML5 for this purpose. Sometimes security software such as antivirus can prevent the update process from executing properly which is why I tend to recommend disabling it. Regarding the file extension association gone, it leaves me speechless as I do not see what could be causing this...

Hello,

I am sorry to read that you went into such issue.

The technical point is the following:

As soon you click on the Update button, the "before update process" is renaming some key programs that needs to be updated in order to allow the Update Release process to be able to copy the new ones even if some of them are already running.

So, if your Update Release program crash at this moment, prior having copy the new program, you are in a situation where:
The registry is requesting the start of c:\wsession\logonsession.exe, BUT, this program has been rename logonsessionold.exe
This is why you was not able to open a session.

---> meaning all file extension associations were gone

This is a completely different story and it just means that your system have a problem (not related to TSplus).
This is possibly why the Update Release did crash.
I have a old .reg file that a customer did provide me many years ago when he had a similar issue.
Possibly (hopefully) this will help you to fix your problem. Can you run it on this system and reboot.

Kind regards

John Davies

Hi guys, Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately last nights update was equally as challenging for me. Here's what happened.. The good news for you all is that this may have been self inflicted! But here's the rundown of what happened:

I logged in, turned off web services, verified all users were out of the system. For good measure, rebooted the server. Logged in, web services off, no users.
Ran the CompatibilityUpdate.exe rebooted. Logged in, web services off, no users. I then ran the UpdateRelease.exe I was able to 'Next.. next.. next.. finish' w/out any issues. I rebooted the server. After the reboot I was unable to login. It would quickly log me off when trying.

I had to call my hosting provider, they can login through console and verified the license and everything looked ok in AdminTool.exe but yet I could not login, no errors, it would just immediately log me out.

So I had them run the "uninst.exe" program and reboot. I Could then login again.

So I tried the running Setup-TSplus.exe and would get an error stating "TSplus is already installed on this system..." error message. Going through Add/Remove Programs to uninstall TSPLUS and got a message that the program was removed. Rebooted the system and tried again, same results..

I then decided to try running 'UpdateRelease.exe' since the installer thought TSPLUS was on the system still. After the update was finished, I rebooted server... After the reboot, I was able to login!!
I started testing some of my logins and noticed that none of their logins were working... it would simply log them in with a blank blue screen. I double checked all of the users/groups - application assignments. All was correct. Then I remembered to fix a problem with the old version 8.1x I was on, I set the "AssignedApplications.ini" to read only. After I removed the read-only attribute, users were able to login and get see their application.

I rebooted one last time... When it came up, I could not login. It would immediately log me off. At this point, I realized it may be an issue with the assigned applications. Previously, you did not have to assign remote desktop to the admins. anyone in the Administrator group could simply log in. I had my hosting company login through console and assign remote desktop to the administrators, and now we can login. My users are all logging in as well. I have a few small issues that I can open a ticket on, but wanted to update you all on this one.

I still have one more server on the 8.1x version that needs updated. Before doing so, I will assign remote desktop to the admins and hopefully that was the issue and it will be much smoother of an upgrade :)

Thanks!!

Hello,

Well done, sounds like you had quite an adventure here ! :D

One comment thought :

You should not use the Compatibility Update patch before updating your server, in fact this patch is no longer needed with 9.10 version of TSplus, and therefore does not support 9.10.
