Universal Printer Troubleshooting

I am really struggling with the Universal Printer. Here are the problems I have had reports on.
1. Printing simply stops working. In order to get printing to work again the client must either do one of the following.
a. They must log out and log back into the session. if that does not work then they must.
b. Change the default printer from one printer to another and then back to the printer they want to print to.
If that does not work then the final step is to log into the server and clear the universal print queue.
2. On the Local resources tab under universal printing option there is no difference on some machines No matter what selection i choose. The PDF will display in the local PDF program. Print on default printer and select the local printer do nothing different.
on these machines I have uninstalled all other PDF programs. Installed different PDF viewers. Used the /clean (which does not seam to do anything) not even a popup to say it worked. and I have removed the RDP6 folder contents.
3. I tried to solve these issues on my own and discovered that there is more than one version of the Universal Printer. V1 and V2. When I look at the information on the server properties the system says I have version V3.
I really need a stable printing solution and need a complete trouble shooting guide. We have tried to deal with these issues for several years and it just seams to get worse.
I am at my wits end with this. What is the most stable Universal Printer and is there a troubleshooting guide. Should I start looking for other ways to print my documents.
