Virtual Printer / Edge / Prints Screenshots

Post by tmwah » Thu Aug 04, 2016 7:35 am

Using the HTML5-Client in Edge on Windows 10, when printing to the virtual printer a Screenshot is printed instead of the document.

Reproduce: Start Edge, Login via HTML5 client on the TSPlus demo site, start Notepad, print, print to the default printer.

As this is happening on the TSPlus demo site too, I guess, this is not related to some local configuration/installation mistake on our side. Has anyone found a solution, yet?

Kind regards,
Tom

Hi,

When using Edge with the HTML5 Client, you have to use:

Virtual Printer IE Edge

Hello Jeffrey,

thanks for the hint ... yes, this improves things quite a bit :-)

Unfortunately this leads to 2 more questions:
  • How can we make the Virtual Printer IE Edge the default printer for users logging in via Edge? It is hard to explain to quite a number of users (and the management) why the system does default to a non-working printer - and the application mainly used does print to the default printer with much less clicks than to a non-default printer.
  • In order to not getting our servers polluted with numerous printers we tend to restrict printer redirection to the default printer. In order to have our users see Virtual Printer IE Edge we have to allow redirecting every single printer. Can't we get around this?
Kind regards,
Tom

Hello,

You will be able to set the Virtual Printer that matches your preference by following the procedure available here : http://www.terminalserviceplus.com/docs/virtual-printer

However printer redirection is not supported with HTML5.

I am afraid, I do not see the solution mentionned on the linked document. Of course, I can change the default printer via printer.bin to i.e. Virtual Printer IE Edge, but then all the users who are not using Edge will suffer, won't they? Am I missing an important point?
However printer redirection is not supported with HTML5.
I do not understand your point. The HTML5 clients does not support printer redirection for its virtual printers, it even requires it. So, if I disable printer redirection on the server or just limit it to the default printer, the Virtual Printer IE Edge disappears (see http://tsplus.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3788). As soon as I enable printer redirection, it is not only enabled for the HTML5 client and its virtual printers, it is also enabled for RDP clients - and I do not like users accessing via RDP polluting servers with their redirected local printers.

I am talking of a multi user environment, with various users using different access methods, so client specific settings, which have to be applied via a non-selective mechanism are a source of numerous troubles.

Kind regards,
Tom

Hello,

Of course the procedure I provided you is useful only if your users are working on the same browser in this case.

If you do not wish to use RDP only because of the ghost redirected printers appearing periodically on the server than you should know there is a GPO that can be enabled to clean these unwanted printers : http://support.tsplus.net/kb/faq.php?id=21

You will find below some general guidelines on how to print remotely with TSplus.

1- Universal Printer :

In order to print using the Universal Printer you need to use a generated connection client or the use of our web client.
The Universal Printer can be configured for three type of print job :

- PDF preview on the local PDF reader : by printing remotely on the Universal Printer, the print job is converted to pdf and sent to the client, it will then be displayed in the local PDF reader of the client.
- Select printer : by printing remotely on the Universal Printer, the print job is converted to pdf and sent to the client, a second print pop up will then appear with the choice of local printers.
- Print on the default printer : This option is the best for those who do not wish to have a choice of where to print, by printing remotely on the Universal Printer, the print job is converted to pdf and sent to the client on the default printer.

You will find here will find more detailed information about this here : http://www.terminalserviceplus.com/docs/

2- Print redirection :
Using standard redirection can be tricky, because many prerequisite must be met in order for it to work.

You need to install the exact same version of device drivers on client side and server side.
This means if your server is installed with 2012 x64 but your client computers are installed with Windows XP x32, you will need to add manually these drivers on your server by editing the print server properties and add x32 drivers for XP.

For best results, it is also recommended not to use USB printers but prefer COM or LPT printers.
If you are using USB printers, make sure you updated the RDP protocol of your client computer to 7 or above to ensure maximum compatibility with redirected printers.

Even with all this in mind exotic printers may not be suitable to be redirected in a TSplus session, therefore you may need to look into specific procedure to install these printers in RDS / terminal server environment, which is very close to TSplus in this case.
