Flickering Apps problem Server 2012 R2 (Solved)

I saw a thread on here yesterday but it looks to have gone now. I was having the same problem, I just came here to post the fix ....

This was happening to my clients a lot, it was more often Outlook 2013 that caused the flickering, it was horrible though, enough to cause a seizure!

The operating system is Windows Server 2012 R2 fully patched up to date 2/3/2015

TSPlus is the latest version too 8.10.2.28

Office 2013 x86, also patched up fully.

at initial login there were no problems but after the users had been working 1-2 hours, outlook would start to freeze, the skin over it would appear to change to a 'basic' skin rather than how its supposed to look ,and then when clicked it would flash very rapidly, the user had to end the process to stop this.

anyway I was logged into a console as admin watching task manager. I noticed that each user has a 'Desktop Windows Manager Process, which is actually linked to an instance of DWM.exe running under a separate user on the system 'dwm-1' 'dwm-2' etc etc.

I noticed the CPU usage spiked on this to pretty much 12.5% (100% of 1 core).

I played about setting priority on certain users dwm.exe threads.

Setting it to Idle stops the freezing and flashing problems. Great I couldn't set process priority it for each user 'at login' because the users aren't admin and the dwm.exe runs under its own username.

In the end I fixed the problem by creating a scheduled task to run every 10 minutes as below :

wmic process where name="dwm.exe" CALL setpriority 64

This sets the priority of all DWM threads to 'idle' as in, use as little CPU as you can to stay running.

I had to set it every 10 minutes to it can catch new DWM threads as users log on and off throughout the day.

Problem solved :-) I hope others find this useful!

Hello,

Thank you for this feedback. the DVM.exe process is related to aero and is the source of many trouble. To prevent any issue related to screen flickering you can also stop and disable the "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" service.
Doing so will disable the transparency of the windows and any aero effect, it will also reduce the bandwidth used for any TSplus connection, which can be useful when connecting from remote places.

You can Disable DWM in Serve r2012 r2 ? Please can you explain how ?

I cant see it in services at all, and goggling says you cant :(

It would be great to disable it altogether!

Hello,

On Windows 8 and Windows 2012, Microsoft is installing a default standard graphic driver that is not enough compatible with some applications and the new Metro interface. As result some applications are flickering.
In order to avoid this annoyance, we have developed a patch that you can download using the following link:
dl-files.com/BlinkingPatch.exe
Just run it as administrator and reboot.
After the reboot, the users will not have any more blinking/flickering annoyances.

Update:
Still the same issue after applying the blinkingpatch.

Hello,

This issue is not related to TSplus, but to the applications you are publishing, for example if you publish Office 2007 instead of Office 2010/2013 you will not have this blinking issue.

Dear admin
Whats the goal then that we use older software with youre software?
We use a accesdb and office 2010 on that server ..
Like claimed 2 weeks ago no problems at all no flickering stuttering.....
Since then after a update its started....
We have 6 compagnies using this sofware time to handle it different then.
Thx!
