Maximum time for any inactive/idle session

Post by Brian » Tue Jul 26, 2016 2:33 pm

Has anyone used the "Maximum time for any inactive/idle session" option?

What I assume this option means, is a user logs in, starts working, then walks away, or min their browser to work on something else. If I set this option to say 5 minutes. I would assume, that after 5 minutes of the user not touching this application at all, it is supposed to log them off.

1st -- does this use the "Status" under Windows Task Manager - Users tab - Status column? If so, it obviously does not work as the Status always 'Active' or 'Disconnected' I have never seen an 'Idle' or any other status, ever.

2nd -- if under Admin Tool - Server - Session Manager. There has never been another status other than 'Active' or 'Disconnected' there as well.

My environment is:

Server 2008 R2
HTML 5 Only

Please let me know.

Thanks!!
Brian

Hello,

This option will allow you to logoff an active remote session automatically.

For example when your users go out to lunch, leaving their session open, it will close automatically after x minutes, x being the value you entered.

If your server is the member of a domain, this strategy may need to be set directly on the domain controller.
Open your domain strategy object editor (gpedit.msc) and locate the following strategy :

Computer configuration / Administrative Template / Windows components / Remote Desktop Services / Remote Desktop Session Host / Session time limit /

Hi Olivier,

I have set the Inactive/Idle session setting to 5 minutes.
I have also went into Computer configuration / Administrative Template / Windows components / Remote Desktop Services / Remote Desktop Session Host / Session time limit / "Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions" setting to enabled and 5 minutes as well.

Rebooted after making these changes

I have connected an iPad as well as a laptop, logged in to an HTML5 session and let them sit for over 15 minutes completely untouched. Their screen savers kicked on and they sat there for another 15 minutes... They never get logged off. The status in task manager never changes from 'Active'

Can someone please test this setting out that is using HTML5? It does not work for me...

Olivier - can you set this up on the demo website so I can see it in action??

Also, just for a test, I have enabled "Set time limit for active Terminal Services session" for 5 minutes per the technet article:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/lib ... s.10).aspx

This worked perfectly. So the problem I am seeing is that an HTML5 session never changes from an "Active" to an "Idle" status. I've seen it change to 'Disconnected' if someone looses internet or they just 'x' out of the browser window, but never "Idle".

Has anyone out there ever seen an "idle" status??

Hello,

The idle status is not visible in the task manager. This idle status means simply that no one is interacting with the mouse / keyboard on the client computer regardless of the connection method during a certain amount of time.

Hello,

Feel free to connect to demo.tsplus.net
I have add this specific setting to kick out any idle session. To see this in action, open a session with username demo password demo and wait 1mn.

This setting will not remain active tomorrow as the demo server is restored to an earlier state every night.

Hi Olivier,

I logged into the demo at 1:33pm eastern time. I opened up notepad and typed in the current time, then left it sit open in another tab. At 1:43pm and it has not logged me off.

I locked my computer at 1:43 for 2 minutes. Logged back in at 1:45, pulled up google chrome, clicked on the HTML5 tab - it's still open.

I closed notepad at 1:47, so nothing is open at all now, just sitting at the desktop. Again I switch tabs so I can type here. at 1:50 it is still open.

I haven't even clicked back on the HTML5 tab, so it should be "idle".. With nothing open, I locked my computer again for another 2 minutes... Once unlocked, it still has me logged into the demo.

FWIW I am running Windows 7 and Google Chrome.

Thanks,
Brian

Hello,

You probably connected too late because it did work fine from my computer after activating this feature.
If this does not work when you set it up on your server, this mean that you have a GPO issue that is probably handled at domain level.

Ultimately you can also modify this behavior directly by editing a registry key if all has failed so far (these registry key are identical on your 2012 server) : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11 ... sions.html
