Need Java period?

Post by TSPlusSMD » Wed Apr 15, 2015 4:08 pm

Version 8.10.3.28: Web Client Access with the “Windows” option (explained as ActiveX) will still load Java. You see it in the upper left of the client connection screen while it is “Your online security is important to us...”. This requires Java on the local workstations and is causing problems on some older XP computers. Why is Java required for the ActiveX client?

There is no such mode like ActiveX, we do not support and will never support ActiveX forever and ever as standalone solution.
The ActiveX is requested for Java on IE to load as applet, Flash needs ActiveX to run on IE.
Without Java you can do nothing when wishing to run Windows client via Web, because it requests Applet loading and that is cleanly Java technology only to be able to run executables via Web like Windows client.
If you do not want to go the Java way, than the only way to run on old XP is the HTML5 client, you need also at least XP SP3 with IE6.5 (6.0 does not work, SP1,SP2) + installed Flash to emulate necessary technology like Canvas+WebSockets(however Websocket can be replaced by XHR, but for Canvas emulation you need anyway Flash), only so you could make to run it on Internet Explorer with XP. Or install proper browser like Chrome/FF.
But as said, for Windows client. also native Client, to run on XP on any browser you need Java installed anyway, we can not help you, if you refuse to install Java.
We appologize, if you misunderstand the ActiveX info and claim it to be only requeested for Windows client, the only thing, activated ActiveX in IE is needed to run Java applet. That is only one existing way for Java/Flash to embed their plugins and communicate with IE browser, also via ActiveX.

Thanks but your reply was a little hard to understand. Windows being the same thing as ActiveX was actually told to me by one of your support people.

So if I understand your response Java is required for both the Java and Windows Web Clients? and Adobe Flash is required for the Windows Client? I don't recall seeing this anywhere. What else is the Windows Web Client dependent on?

and since both Java and Windows Client require Java what is the difference between the two clients?

ActiveX can be activated by checking the ActiveX box located in the admin tool / web tile / webmaster toolkit / Java client tab. However java is still mandatory so your browser's security must be set to allow java to run. More information about the WebMaster toolkit can be found here : terminalserviceplus.com/docs/webmaster-toolkit
