I experimented with some options and inadvertently checked "start for all users" (I think?) which resulted in ALL users getting access to only one app, including the Administrator. As soon as the app is closed, the session ends.
Any ideas on how to get access to the desktop / Admin tool again?

In case someone else is faced with this, here is a solution proposed by the fine folks at support:
When connected with an admin user, press ctrl + alt + end to open a task manager. From there, click "Start new task" and type in explorer.exe. This should give you your desktop back. You can also directly start the admin tool by entering its full path : C:\Program Files (x86)\TSplus\UserDesktop\files\AdminTool.exe
